Wellington 1940's
We live in Mirimar in the street with the first state houses in Fife Street.
It is such a nice house compared to what we used to have. We used to live in a garage and we used to pay 11s 6d a week for it. It was very unhealthy. Some people had money lent from State Advances to build a house, but in the depression many of them could not afford to keep up the payments. Many houses had only outside long drop toilets and no comfort and very small rooms. Many houses had no kitchens.
